Maned Wolf (5) vs. Chacoan Peccary (4)
The maned wolf usually lives alone and avoids trouble by using sounds, body signals, and scent marks to claim space. The Chacoan peccary, on the other hand, often lives in small groups, and the whole group helps protect the babies.
Late in the afternoon, a peccary is out looking for fruit—even though it’s really hot. Nearby, a maned wolf is resting in the shade. Suddenly, he is magically dropped right next to a prickly pear cactus where the peccary is happily eating ripe fruit.
The peccary freezes, then grunts loudly and swings her head, flashing her sharp tusks to warn the wolf away. The maned wolf steps closer, curious about the tasty smell. That’s enough.
The peccary charges forward in a quick spin and lunge, clacking her teeth. Startled, the maned wolf yips, spins away, and runs off.
The peccary keeps her cactus snack—and wins the battle!
