Alligator Gar (2) and Frilled Shark (3)
Alligator gars are giant, armored fish with very few natural predators, though humans have greatly reduced their numbers by changing rivers and overfishing. Frilled sharks are deep-sea hunters that are rarely seen and usually live far below the ocean’s surface.
In Texas, an alligator gar glides through the murky waters of Galveston Bay. Far away in Japan, a frilled shark swims up into shallower water looking for squid—when suddenly, she is magically transported into the bay. Slithering forward, she spots what looks like a floating log… but it’s actually the gar.
The frilled shark sneaks closer and lunges, biting the gar’s side. But the gar’s tough, armor-like scales protect her from serious injury. The gar spins quickly and snaps back, using her powerful jaws to grab the shark.
Although the gar can’t swallow such a large prey, the frilled shark is badly injured and sinks away. The alligator gar remains in control of the waters.
