Sun Bear (2) and Colugo (3)

Sun bears don’t have many natural predators, but they are threatened by humans, so they tend to avoid areas near farms. Colugos, which are expert gliders, can survive in forests broken up by roads and development, but they are still at risk when moving between trees.

A sun bear climbs up into a favorite fig tree, using his strong claws and flexible feet to pull himself into the branches. Far away, a colugo clings quietly to a tree trunk—until she is suddenly magically transported into the same fig tree as the bear.

The sun bear reaches for figs, then starts climbing down the tree. The colugo sends out a high-pitched call, hoping to find others of her kind. As the bear steps downward, one of his claws accidentally catches part of the colugo’s gliding skin.

Startled, the colugo drops from the tree and spreads her gliding membrane. Even though it’s damaged, she manages to glide away and land safely in nearby trees, escaping the encounter.

The sun bear remains in control of the fig tree.
