Project-Based Computationally-Rich Learning
Connecting Learning to Life
What We Do
Innovative Projects
We create computationally-rich project-based learning units that integrate Virginia computer science standards with core content like science, english language arts, math, and social studies, using an innovative 5-pillar instructional design framework.
The Innovation Fellowship
Our team works through and alongside Charlottesville Middle School teachers called Innovation Fellows. We co-design and co-teach innovative project-based-learning units alongside CMS teachers, and provide a year-long intensive professional development experience through the Innovation Fellowship.
Educator Resources
We share Virginia standards-aligned project materials, project plans, and lesson plans here on our website freely available. Charlottesville City faculty and Charlottesville community organizations can also check out STEM education equipment from our lending lab.
Our Instructional Model
Every Innovation Hub project aligns with our 5-pillar instructional design framework:
Multidisciplinary: Every core content area engaged
Student-Centered: Maximizing student feedback, exploration, and inquiry
Authentically-Relevant: Students solve real-world challenges relevant to them and their communities
Computationally-rich: Explicitly integrates with durable computational thinking and computer science standards
Project-Based: Open-ended hands-on projects that build collaboration, communication, and critical thinking
The Innovation Fellowship
The Innovation Hub Teacher Fellowship Program is a year-long professional learning experience for core content teachers at Charlottesville Middle School.
Fellows collaboratively design interdisciplinary, computationally-rich projects that center student creativity, real-world problem-solving, and authentic learning experiences.
The fellowship brings together educators, community partners, and Innovation Hub staff to rethink how learning happens - across classrooms, content areas, and the broader Charlottesville community.
Educator Resources
Through our lending library, we can support innovative educators across Charlottesville. Any Charlottesville Schools faculty or staff member, and representatives of select Charlottesville community organizations, can check out STEM education equipment, professional learning resources, and more! Our team can also provide professional learning, sample project and lessons, and operating instructions for any of our equipment.
Our Impact
600 Students served: Every 7th and 8th grade student in Charlottesville experiences Innovation Hub projects!
7 projects: Exploring sound waves, slope, animal adaptations, and more: our projects bring hands-on learning to every core content area!
8 teachers served: A new cohort of innovation fellows experiences our year-long fellowship every year!
